“Introducing the KUKULCAN, Dr. No’s latest creation, born from a year of intense experimentation. This handcrafted guitar effect is the culmination of Dr. No’s relentless pursuit of sonic and artistic innovation. Initially, Dr. No sought to craft a device that would shatter the boundaries of sound, but the prototype proved too potent, too uncontrollable.
The circuit, comprising three stacked gain stages in one circuit, generated an overwhelming amount of distortion, rendering it impractical.
Undeterred, Dr. No revisited the design in 2025, decoupling each gain stage by creating three separate gain stages and assigning its own circuit activation footswitch and gain potentiometer. This bold move unlocked a new dimension of nuanced natural signal changes. By preserving the inherent characteristics of each stage, Dr. No was able to coax the KUKULCAN into a cohesive, yet formidable entity.

Dr. No Effects KUKULCAN
The KUKULCAN is, in theory, a triple-stage powerfull preamp that pushes the signal into natural clipping, driven by 3 separate single gain stages powered by the custom Dr. No Effects “Skullsistors”.
In principle, the KUKULCAN stacks three preamps after each other, generating a previously unheard tone without changing the character of the guitar, hand, and amp, but rather pushes the instrument’s sound outside known borders, leaving the character of each involved instrument but also the individual playing style intact.
The KUKULCAN’s staging is labeled on the device as “Rain” for the 1st stage, “Storm” for the added 2nd stage, and generates a literal “Earthquake” when adding the 3rd stage.
Even when using half the setting of two stages, for example, this doesn’t sound the same as a single stage fully open. This makes the KUKULCAN a unique, one-of-a-kind natural signal exaggerator, ranging from mild and mellow to its maximum extreme.
Also inside the KUKULCAN, Dr. No added a power noise filter to eliminate power supply noise often related with preamps. The KUKULCAN uses a 9V power supply with a regular 2.1mm connector.
Kukulcan, whose name means “feathered serpent”, was a creator god and the god of rain, wind, storms, and life. Throughout Mesoamerica, the snake, due to its living habits, symbolized life both below and above the earth, serving as a connection between the gods and humanity. Kukulkan as a creator figure who brought order to the world and taught early communities important skills such as agriculture, art, and astronomy.

The original inspiration for the KUKULCAN came from a decades-long fascination and perhaps even obsession with a specific guitar sound that has always stayed with Dr. No.
“I have mind collected a few of these sounds over the years, and may not be the most obvious or conventional tones, but that’s where my fascination lies, and even the origin of my 24-year existence as a guitar effect doctor.
I’ve often wondered how this artist managed to create this beautiful “broken” sound.”
“I’m talking about the sound in the song by none other than the Master of all Reality, and one of the founding fathers of a genre and scene that is close to my heart, “Annihilation of the Spirit“. This song was the starting point for creating the KUKULCAN, and I want to pay tribute to this song and especially to the beautiful “broken sound”,
by bringing the KUKULCAN.
